Manager- Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Design Engineer

Job Description

 

The Manager – Solar & BESS Design (Individual Contributor) will be responsible for end-to-end technical design and engineering support for utility-scale hybrid projects combining Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and grid integration.

The role focuses on optimised plant design, regulatory compliance, technical risk management, and cross-functional coordination to ensure efficient project execution.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

1. Electrical Network Design & Engineering

  • - Design and optimise utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems. 
  • - Perform Electrical Balance of Plant (BoP) design, including cable sizing, routing, protection systems, grounding, and grid interconnection. 
  • - Improve design accuracy and reduce electrical losses. 

 

2. Plant Estimation, Design & Engineering

  • - Estimate land requirements and plant resources on a per-MW basis. 
  • - Design and specify solar transformers, inverters, and associated electrical equipment. 
  • - Conduct detailed Energy Yield Assessments (EYA) using tools such as PVsyst and similar software. 
  • - Drive design optimisation and cost efficiency. 

 

3. Cross-Functional Coordination

  • - Collaborate with civil, structural, and mechanical engineering teams for integrated plant design. 
  • - Prepare technical documentation and support permitting activities. 
  • - Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning. 
  • - Lead design reviews and mentor site and Asset Operations teams for performance improvement. 

 

4. Grid & Regulatory Compliance

  • - Ensure compliance with national and local grid codes, renewable energy regulations, and environmental standards. 
  • - Coordinate grid interconnection studies, impact assessments, and regulatory submissions with utilities and authorities. 
  • - Support timely regulatory approvals and compliance. 

 

5. Risk & Budget Management

  • - Identify technical risks during the design phase and recommend mitigation measures.  
  • - Support project budget control through accurate engineering inputs. 
  • - Minimise variation orders and engineering claims. 
  • - Maintain and update project risk registers. 

 

6. Monitoring & Reporting

  • - Stay updated with industry trends, regulations, and technical developments through continuous learning. 
  • - Monitor regulatory changes and communicate their impact to stakeholders. 
  • - Maintain effective communication with vendors, regulatory authorities, clients, and internal teams. 
  • - Provide timely technical updates and clarifications throughout the project lifecycle. 

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • - B.Tech in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. 
  • - Minimum 10 years of experience in Solar PV and BESS design engineering. 
  • - Experience in preparing and submitting grid code compliance studies and regulatory documentation will be an added advantage. 

 

Technical Skills

  • - Strong knowledge of Electrical Balance of Plant (BoP), Solar PV system design, BESS integration, energy yield assessments, and grid interconnection. 
  • - Expertise in solar design tools such as PVsyst, AutoCAD, ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD, and DIgSILENT
  • - Knowledge of SCADA systems and remote monitoring solutions. 
  • - Familiarity with national and international standards including IEC, IEEE, IS, NEC, and grid codes. 
  • - Proficiency in MS Office and MS Project.
